Army sends a volunteer company to patrol the uncharted western territories
Narrative
In the winter of 1862, during the Civil War, the U.S. Minervini had a set built in Montana and then left the cast to live there for two months.
Roberto Minervini is known for his dramatic yet documentary approach to American rural life
The dialogue and thoughts expressed are those that the actors came up with while living in the wilderness, imagining themselves as soldiers in the Civil War. Filled with beautiful camerawork and a meditative study of the Civil War era and its characters, Minervini offers an interesting new approach to discussing the aimless and harrowing journey of soldiers wondering about and observing their surroundings and the battles of war.
Strong sound design, natural performances, and camerawork help establish the tone, atmosphere, and setting
Including good direction used throughout the play and some of the battle sequences that are well directed and presented. Although some of the dialogue ends up feeling awkward, this sometimes ruins aspects of the realism.
I guess I’m a bit pretentious lol
Overall, the beautiful and mediative approach to Civil War is something I find interesting. I know many won’t like this one, but I really like this.
